Lake Powhatan
The closest recreation area to the cottages is the Lake Powhatan Recreation Area
in the Pisgah National Forest (4 miles). Here, you have a choice of several outdoor
activities. If the weather is warm, you can swim in Lake Powhatan. The lake has
a beach area that makes it is very convenient and fun. If hiking or mountain biking
is your thing, the trails here are endless. It is a very popular spot for mountain
biking. We have group of guest that come down every year from Maine to spend
a week mountain biking in this area (and sitting in the hot tub each night). The
fishing here is also great. Lake Powhatan is the only lake in Western North Carolina
that is stocked each year with trout. You can fish from the pier or from anywhere
along the shoreline. There is a large creek called Bent Creek running off of the
lake that is also stocked each year. Depending on when it is stocked, Marshall and
the kids have come home with a cooler full or nothing at all. That’s why they call
it "fishing" and not "catching".
