North Mills River Recreation Area

About 15 miles from our cabin rental Asheville NC lies one of the best areas around for a secluded picnic by the river. The North Mills River Recreation Area is a large government protected tract of land in the middle of the forest (or jungle as some will call it). The river (Mills River) that runs through the middle of this area is shallow and slow flowing which allow you the ability to walk, sit and play in the river without any fear. The water is cold but very refreshing on a hot summer day.

There are plenty of picnic tables near the river close enough to enjoy the sound of the water while eating lunch. If you prefer to cook, there is a grill near each picnic table. If you want to take a hike while you are there, you could walk forever. When the kids were young, this was our favorite place to take them to enjoy the river and to get some energy out. We have also camped here several times throughout the years.

Like everywhere you go in Asheville, be careful of poison ivy (one of our sons got into some while using the bathroom not far from the campground-we laugh about that to this day). As long as you stay on the paths, you won’t have a problem. If you are going during the middle of summer, know that you may see yellow jackets flying around any sweet food you have open. No need to fear them, just put your food away when you’re finished and they will go away.

When you’re all finished at the river, you will be only 30 minutes away from our cabin rental Asheville NC where you can sit back in your La-Z-Boy recliner and watch more than 200 channels (plus 20 movie channels) by the fire.
